Campeche is probably one of the youngest cities in Mexico, and built around the
1540s by the Spaniards, although the city is actually built over an existing Mayan
city (Canpech or Kimpech).
The layout of the city is typical of Spanish Colonial cities, with streets & avenues
constructed in a grid system, with roads running North to South, East to West. Many
facades providing an authentic feel to the town.
The streets are quite narrow in the main historical part of the city, with quaint little
hotels dotted all over town, and prices for lodgings are quite reasonable. Plus there
a few nice little restaurants surrounding the Central Park.
The forts where built before the city wall was constructed, and whilst the local
natives lived outside the city wall's, the Spaniards always remained inside the
Campeche, which also is home to the library of I.N.A.H (Instituto Nacional de
Antropologia e Historia). The Mayan ruin sites of Campeche have been
beautifully preserved, and are dotted all over the state, such as Edzna, Becan,
Calkmul, Chicanna, Balamku, and El Tigre to name just a few.
