Lots of souvenirs are made in the
Mayan homes, especially the
hammocks. Even traditional jewellery is
handcrafted, silver and amber being
the most commonly used, especially in
Mexico.
Not much has changed over hundreds
of years, and most certainly will be
handcrafted from natural resource of
their regions.
Artifacts and replica items depicting all
aspects of Mayan history can be found
within all the "Artesanias" and souvenir
shops all over Mexico. Funerary masks
or death masks can be found in
numerous guises and made from many
precious stones, or just basic wood
carvings. Sculptures depicting the
Mayan gods & kings are very elaborate
and ornate.
Very large souvenir stores are run as
"co-operatives" for all the local villages
to provide their wares, and then
redistributed to small shops and markets
for resale.
When purchasing souvenirs remember
you are providing the local economy
that assists the Mayan communities with
sustainable growth and stability.
