Monte Alban  - Oaxaca
0
Monte Alban in Oaxaca is a pre-
Columbian Mayan site surrounded
by a mountainous range which
encloses the city of
Oaxaca.

It is possibly one of the most
important Mesoamerican cities,
providing the capital Social,
Political, and Economical
dominance for nearly 1000
years.

At the pinnacle of the civic
ceremonial centre are the
monuments of Monte Alban,
which are characterized by
hundreds of artificial terraces and
clusters of mounded architecture
surrounded the entire ridgeline.

The city was pretty much
abandoned around the end of the
Late Classic period (AD 500-700),
and maybe some reoccupations
was sought but not on a huge
scale, although proof of rituals
and tombs are evident of later
periods.

Monte Alban’s name remains
unclear due to the abandonment
of the city before earliest writings
could be sought.
